Final project for Performance Art & Feminism, Fall 2006

biodrag is a term used to designate people performing the gender of their assigned, "biological" sex. For our final project, we decided to spend a whole day in biodrag. Rather than being an experiment in Halloween costumes, however, we wanted to dress the biodrag of alternate gender realities - gender expressions that were close to our everyday lived reality; genders that we could have been; genders that made us uncomfortable; and/or genders that we actively had tried not to be in "real" life. During the day of biodrag, most people didn't know that we were performing (or perhaps that we had changed anything at all). This made it all the more complicated and occasionally uncomfortable. And one thing that we realized is that performing gender is intimately interlinked with performing race and class.
