Artist Statement

My undergraduate background is primarily from paintings and drawings, since I majored in paintings. During that time, I worked on drawings, mostly dealing with female nude and its abstraction.

Thematically, Egon Schiele influenced much on my works and concepts for my practice. Broken morality and sexual desire represented in his paintings are still considered as taboo in many societies. This is especially true in Korea, but ironically, sex industry and illegal prostitution are also prevalent in the country. Schiele is certainly the one whose artistic expression explains such an ironic social situation of sex culture. I have dealt with such this issue by expressing female sexuality with drawings, and installations.
For now,
I am interested in video’s fundamental relation to timing and sound. I want to explore video medium’s transformative nature between the visual and sense of time. I am much interested in how distorted time and sound are treated and expressed as a visual element. As time and sound are stretched or shortened in the work, viewers can experience great range of audio-visual dimension.

Bio.Kyoungsub makes video works that build on his sounds in video as well as his interest in the changing art and design society with advanced technology.

He started making video works at age twenty six and spent 4 years learning visual effects and shooting videos. His painting and video works have been showed in many exhibitions and festivals including the 2007 Resfest Korea. He has exhibited his work in galleries.

In his work, Kyongsub distorts time and sounds which are stretched or shortened in the work, viewers can experience great range of audio-visual dimension. He continues to explore new ways to express his theme with interactional ways.
