THESIS PROJECT
The Thesis Project class provides an opportunity for the student to assemble a culminating work or suite of works toward the MFA thesis exhibition. The thesis committee chair serves as primary advisor in approving the final work. The class is facilitated through a series of individual meetings, culminating in a public exhibition. Students develop this work, in conjunction with the Written Thesis class (D+M 7198), in consultation with their Thesis Committee. The Thesis Committee Chair serves as primary advisor in approving the final work. The class initiates with the development of a pragmatic time line. The student works either alone or in collaboration. Any collaboration must be given perMission by the student’s thesis committee. The labor involved in a collaborative work must be clearly defined. The student first defines a plan for the exhibition, including schematic diagram, Equipment diagram, and power needs. The student should also create an image, emulation or representative drawing of the work along with a short biography and artist statement to be used for press purposes and in the exhibition catalog or other documentation. A major final critique with visiting critics is facilitated and places the work in the public sphere. Multiple discussions over the course of the semester cover the scope of the project, pragmatic matters related to construction-elements of form and content. The work may either be a finished piece or may be a fragment/proof of concept related to a much larger work. The class must be taken for a minimum of 6 credits enrolled with the Thesis Chair.
