Sample, Mashup, Remix – 2012
In this course we will explore techniques and practices associated with the remix. Students will be presented with a series of short projects, and one final project, that will both technically and conceptually challenge ideas of remix, sampling and mashup. Using digital technologies (software such as Final Cut Pro for video and Ableton Live for sound), students will learn how to creatively approach time-based art-making. In addition to technique in creation, students will also learn about the art of appropriation.
The course will be split between studio time, workshops, listening and viewing sessions, and discussions based on readings. We will investigate the social and theoretical implications of a remix oriented culture.
We will examine work and writings by artists and thinkers such as Marshall Mcluhan, Paul D. Miller AKA DJ Spooky That Subliminal Kid, Bruce Lessig, DJ Shadow, Amon Tobin, Emergency Broadcast Network, Christian Marclay, William S. Burroughs, Girl Talk, Cory Arcangel, and Borna Sammak.
No prior audio or video editing skills required
