Exploring Sci-Fi – 2012
For decades, science fiction authors have investigated in great depth topics such as the effects of technology on society and culture, utopias/dystopias, gender, environmental issues, politics and war, surveillance, augmented reality, and more. They explore both our wildest dreams and our greatest fears for where technology might lead us in the future. Familiarity with important works of science fiction is valuable for any artist whose work addresses these topics. Each week will be structured around one major theme in science fiction. We will cover classic and contemporary works of science fiction dealing with these topics side-by-side with relevant artists and theory readings. Projects can be in any medium in reaction to the concepts discussed that week. Experiencing science fiction, theoretical texts, and making work all in the same context is highly unusual and will spark novel connections and ideas for new directions in the students artistic practices.
