BUSTED 2011

Instructor: Derek P. Boyle
Course Number 2019
Credits 3

This is a studio and discussion-based course that encourages free experimentation in creating artwork within the context of appropriation. Students will engage the act of appropriation and the use of found art or the “readymade” as a mode of making art within their practice and discipline.

This course examines issues related to authorship, assemblage, and appropriation in art and visual culture, such as the role of found objects, the historical development of the “A”rtist, the use of quotation, parody, collage and montage, and the significance of digital technologies. We will examine both historical and contemporary examples from a wide range of media to develop a vocabulary for discussing the nuances of appropriation in modern and contemporary art.
