The meaning of a question is the method of answering it.
-Ludwig Wittgenstein-

Just as film historians traced the development of film language during cinema’s first decades, I aim to describe and understand the logic driving the development of the language of new media.
-Lev Manovich-

Interestingly, without a computer algorithm, an experimental filmmaker made a creative database film several decades ago. With computer programming, what kind of film can we create? We can break the fixed film by using an algorithmic database. This studio course seeks to explore new ways of creating database film. Among the new methods introduced, this course will encourage students to use computer programming and a database. First of all, students learn about creative rule-based films such as “Man with a Movie Camera,” “Drowning by Numbers,” and “Zorns Lemma”. Secondly, students build a database that they are interested in. Finally, students create their own algorithmic media by using their database. This class will cover a basic introduction to filmmaking, programming, processing, and Max/MSP Jitter.
