3X = (ARTS+TIMES+BODIES)

Instructor: P. Gavin Hogben
Course Number 5126-01
Credits 3
Open to Open to All Students

Working with the human body as its primary site, this course examines the foundations of the ‘time-based’ arts – from film, video, sound and performance, to interaction, web, algorithmic and beyond. It is structured as a research studio that combines practice with an ongoing program of critical readings and seminars.

The objective is to reveal time as a complex construction, and to suggest that it is as much the subject, and product, of ‘time-based’ arts as it is the basis of the media techniques they commonly employ. The course explores three constructions of time – experiential, technological, institutional – and it tracks their respective, and cumulative, implications for our understanding of bodies exercising agency in the world.

Diverse explorations of media/practices, and independent critical perspectives, are encouraged, and an ongoing dialog between the practical, and critical, modes of working is expected. The common focus on the body, and the continuing seminar conversation, will allow individuals to situate their explorations within a shared research environment. At the end of the course, the individual perspectives and the shared environment will be brought together in an exhibit of the work.
Major elective for D+M majors. Also offered as FAV 5126 for FAV majors.
Open to other senior, fifth-year, graduate by permission
