Applying to Digital + Media

Applicants should have the equivalent of four years of digital media related study: an education in media arts; and/or a combined art/design education. Media computer scientists, electrical engineers and others will be considered where appropriate. Students from non-traditional Backgrounds may be required to take supplementary courses to complete their preparation. On entry into the program, one should already be well versed in the creative use of digital media. Self-motivated work, the ability to research advanced technological issues independently, and a commitment to pursuing highly original and critical perspectives related to digital production, are pivotal to the successful completion of the program.

Portfolio Requirements

Each Applicant must submit a portfolio – TWENTY IMAGES OR REPRESENTATIVE EXAMPLES IN THE MEDIUM/FORMAT BEST SUITED TO PRESENTATION OF THE WORK. Many people submit a PDF or Flash portfolio of digital materials including video. You may also include a CD or DVD of interactive work, a list of URLs and/or a 10 minute video of excerpts of video work or CG animation. Please mark Mac or PC on discs. Please submit a statement of purpose that clearly identifies your interest in the program and specifically addresses how you think you might best explore and utilize its offerings.

Laptop Computer Requirement

The purchase of a specific “loaded” laptop computer from RISD is required and detailed information will be provided to incoming students.

Assistantships

The department offers various departmental assistantships. Specific research-oriented funding is also available on a limited basis. An interview with the graduate program coordinator (by phone) is required after the first tier of selection and can be arranged by Contacting the Digital Media program office.
