Yan Da
Artist Statement: I like to call myself A Walking MAN. I enjoy walking in Music, Architecture and Nature. That is the M.A.N who constantly enlightens me. Music gives me abstraction, passion and fluidity. I enjoy embodying them and translating between sonic and visual. Herbert von Karajan’s visual virtuosity in conducting music inspired me for developing a gestural methodology in many of my works. I called it post-conducting, which is also extended into people’s gesture in a networked experience. Architecture teaches me how to read a space and to find relationships between spaces; Nature ignites me by its randomness and profoundness. That is why I chose digital media, which enables to create a system with which, I could enrich my work with a constant flow of structure, a highly complex hierarchy and a controlled randomness and versatility. I have been struggling to create works that could dialogue with the M.A.N. who inspired me. I will keep walking.
