ARTIST STATEMENT When I have a conflict with others, I can resolve that conflict after understanding their situations. I believe there is an overwhelming moment of the extension of consciousness in this tiny event. What this means is I can extend my consciousness so I can calm myself by meeting and understanding the consciousness of others. In this belief, I think art is one of the best ways for extension of consciousness, because audiences can get the chance to meet artists’ consciousness. The subject of my art work is about that process itself, the extension of consciousness. In the aspect of Media, I believe that extension of consciousness can happen through the immersion process. The immersion can be made from the moment of finding new ways of using media with overcoming stereotypes about them. I tried to match the interaction of audiences to the design of interface intuitively. For I’m Bob, I matched the acceleration information from the sensor to the movement of playing 3 dimensional images. Also for Will-be and Novie, I linked the technology of Augmented Reality with the movement of playing 3 dimensional images. I connected the power of immediate interaction in computing to traditional concepts of time, book and human behavior in Nime, Nook and What Lifeforms Do. Recently, I finished Walk This Way matching the shoe wearer’s insubstantial consciousness to the substantial form: speed. In the aspect of contents, I tried to use the power of storytelling. I believe the process of the extension of consciousness is exactly same to the core of storytelling: the curious event as the cause and awakening of protagonist as the result. In I’m Bob, the protagonist, Bob, returns to the starting point after realizing the fact that all other characters in his journey were also Bob, himself. I want to provide audiences the experience to feel the same situation totally differently after their awakening. Along with this, I illustrated some comics, such as Report, based on the passion to traditional storytelling. I am now striving to make a new channel for storytelling by exactly matching elements of storytelling to the interaction of digital media. BIOGRAPHY Mideum Shin was born in 1978 and double majored in Computer Engineering and Visual Communication Design at Hong-ik University in South Korea. He received his MFA degree at the Digital+Media department in Rhode Island School of Design in 2009. He tried to match the media and technologies, based on the extensive information known about them, to intuitive human interaction. Mideum has used mainly ‘Augmented Reality’ and ‘Physical Computing’ in his works to provide the audience an immersing experience with an intuitive interface. He participated in a competition for a poster at the International Augmented Reality Symposium, ISMAR, with his storyboard authoring tool project Will be in 2005. He was also one of the first members of an interactive study group called Interactivity & Practice (I&P), which is funded by the Art Center Nabi in Korea and experiments various possibilities of interactive media. He is now striving to make a new channel for storytelling using interactive digital media.
