ARTIST STATEMENT My work explores the hybridism of sculpture, influenced by 3D technology. For the past two years I have been exploring digital sculpture. This exploration led me to investigate object making in virtual space. Once I began to see virtual space as a place to explore non-material based object making I became interested in ways of taking these virtual objects outside of the virtual space and bringing them into real space. In my research I found many ways of doing this using new technologies such as Rapid Prototyping (RP), Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Milling, and Laser Cutting. These new tools allowed me to create objects I would not have made before and has started an investigation about object making that is unique to a contemporary practice exploring the interaction of particular materials as they relate to the space between the virtual and the real. Much of my exploration of digital object making has been with Rapid Prototyping a process of creating sculpture in real space through modeling in virtual space with 3D software. Rapid Prototyping is a way to make a 3D print, or a real object from a virtual 3D object. When creating my work I model and then animate figures looking for precise moments that are engaged in a dialogue about present-day human emotions. When creating figures with 3D technology, for the sake of sculpture making, I see the figure as having entered into a dialogue that discuss the contemporary figure. Using these tools addresses both the artist and the viewer understanding of the current state of the body. Making the figure out of computerized technology speaks to our present and future reality of the body composed of natural and computerized components, such as, cloned organs and Rapid Prototyped skins. My work is made from the consciousness of seeing ourselves in the context of current technology’s effect on us. There are three important philosophical underpinnings to this creative process: first, my relationship to materials and the human form- I embrace a point of view that sees material and technology as their own inherent contents; second, I have a commitment to an exploration that is not seeking a pre-determined outcome, akin to the ideologies of Minimalism; and last, I am interested in 3D technology and the potential variety of uses for technology in my current and future work. BIOGRAPHY Blue Wade is a digital media installation artist born and raised in New York. She developed an interest in art very early attending the High school of Art and Design later receiving her BA from University of California at Berkeley with a double major in Art Practice and Interdisciplinary Studies Field. She received her MFA in Digital Media from Rhode Island School of Design. Blue’s first love has been the passionate figure. The love of the figure and object making has led to her interest in construction environments or worlds where her figures belong. Each environment is a combination of virtual and real space often consisting of video, animation, digital sculpture (virtual objects and 3D generated sculptures real space objects) and traditional materials of sculpture. These installations serve as environments that are meant to be experienced. Her art has been exhibited both nationally and internationally.
