Clement Valla (DM09) and Erik Berglin ICONOCLASHES OPENING RECEPTION SATURDAY MAY 11, 2013 (6-9PM) at MULHERIN + POLLARD, 187 Chrystie St. NY, NY 10002 EXHIBITION DATES : MAY 8 - JUNE 9, 2013 "Iconoclashes" are a clashing of objects in various time periods, in an assortment of cultures, representing a multiplicity of religions. The starting point of these images is the Metropolitan Museum of Art's public web archive; specifically all photographs of objects tagged with the keywords 'God' or 'Religion.' These source images were randomly grouped and digitally merged with a Photomerge script inside Adobe Photoshop. The script is a common algorithm used to stitch separate images together into longer panoramas. In the case of "Iconoclashes," the script attempts to blend these "God"-tagged images together, creating chimeric deities, hybrid talismans, and surreal stellae, gods and statues.

Please join us Tuesday + Wednesday, March 19 + 20 at 6:30pm for a conversation with The Raqs Media Collective (Jeebesh Bagchi, Monica Narula, and Shuddhabrata Sengupta). Raqs (pron. rux) is one of the most important collectives working in contemporary art and new media. Raqs follows a self-declared imperative of 'kinetic contemplation' to produce a trajectory that is restless in terms of the forms and methods that it deploys even as it achieves a consistency of speculative procedures. Their work thus ranges from documentaries to installations, from curating to editing books, from staging theatrical events to collaborating with computer programmers. Their documentaries and time-based installations have been shown at all the major biennials, and they were co-curators of Manifesta 7, the European Biennial of Contemporary Art. They also helped found SARAI, a groundbreaking new media organization housed in the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies in New Delhi.
